On February 27, 2014, the San Diego City Council voted 8-1 to approve an ordinance that would regulate medical marijuana dispensaries. The law should go into effect in about 45 days.
Interim Mayor Todd Gloria indicated he supported the ordinance because it was balanced. That is, he feels it will protect communities, and at the same time, allow medical marijuana patients who have a doctor's recommendation to have safe access to medical marijuana. Mayor elect Kevin Faulconer also voted in favor of the ordinance.
Current dispensaries may have to close until they are in compliance with the new regulations. The new regulations include the following:
- Getting a conditional use permit
- Hiring security guards
- Not opened within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, parks, child care centers, playgrounds and drug/alcohol treatment facilities
- No onsite medical professionals
- 100 feet away from residential zones
- A limit of four dispensaries per district
